Phytonutrients & Chakras

It is likely no surprise to you that in order for our bodies to generate energy we must consume calories. Most of us understand that basic function of food but what we often forget that we also need essential nutrients to manufacture and process this energy. 99.9% of people are walking around with some sort of a nutrient deficiency and are not even aware that they are feeling less than magnificent because it has become their new norm.

In addition to the nutrients our bodies need to produce energy certain food can also impact our chakras the 7 main energy centers within our bodies. For those of you who are new to chakras, you may be wondering how the heck food and chakras are connected or what the heck a chakra even is.

I’ll start by explaining the 7 chakras. Over 2000 years ago the chakras were established. While the technology wasn't available to understand at the time, each of the 7 chakra centers lies on the spinal cord at the junction of key arteries and nerve centers. In more recent years alternative medicine practitioners have taken an interest in these energy centers and their correlation with certain health conditions and thought patterns.

the 7 Chakra Centers

  • Crown (lavender/white) - related spiritual connection, consciousness, transcendence and peace. Blockages may manifest as loss of faith depression and confusion. It is correlated with the pineal gland.

  • Third Eye (indigo)- Related to identity, intuition and insight. Blockages manifest as self-doubt, poor ability to visualize and decreased memory. It is related to the pituitary gland & brain functions.

  • Throat (turquoise/blue)- Related to communication, identity & speaking our truth. Blockages manifest as anxiety about what others think of us & fear of speaking or expressing our truth. It is related to the thyroid gland.

  • Heart (green) - Related to love, compassion, generosity & self-acceptance. Blockages manifest as loneliness & lack of connection. It is related to the circulatory system, thymus gland and heart health.

  • Solar Plexus (yellow) - Related to ego, identity, energy & confidence. Blockage manifest as digestive issues, frustration, disempowerment & low self-worth. It is related to the digestive system, liver, spleen & gallbladder.

  • Sacral (orange) - related to emotions, sexuality, creativity, fun & going with the flow. Blockages manifest as fear of pleasure, loss of creativity & feeling empty. It is related to the reproductive organs.

  • Root (red) - Related to stability, feeling safe, grounding, support system & being present. Blockages manifest as anxiety, feeling run-down & fear of rejection. It is related to the adrenal glands & excretory system.

Because of their placement and associated systems, certain nutrients have an impact on the energy flow of each of these systems. Phytonutrients the pigments we find in the plant-based foods we consume. Ironically each phytonutrient color corresponds with the color represented by each chakra. be no surprise with each of these energy center’s connection to different systems in our body that nutrition plays a role in the maintenance of the health and alignment of these energy centers. If you suspect one of your chakra centers is out of alignment — for example, if you’re struggling with memory, visualizing your future and intuition maybe your third eye is out of flow — its a wonderful idea to eat foods that correspond with that energy center.
